Resources/Boat charters

Boat charters from
Marina de Vilamoura.

Marina de Vilamoura is the largest marina in Portugal and one of the busiest in southern Europe. From its docks you're 40 minutes to the Benagil caves, 20 minutes to reliable dolphin pods, and inside a proper sunset in under an hour. These are the operators we introduce our owners' guests to.

Licensed skippers, safety-inspected boats. Every operator on our list holds a current Portuguese maritime licence and passenger-vessel insurance.

What it is

Half-day, full-day and sunset charters

Three trip formats dominate. The half-day dolphin trip (2h30) is the entry point — cheap, high hit-rate for wildlife, back to the marina in time for lunch. The Benagil caves day trip (6–7h) heads west past Albufeira and Armação de Pêra to the cliff coast, with swimming stops at Marinha and Praia da Rocha. Sunset cruises (2h) leave at 19:00 in summer and pair well with a chef dinner back at the villa.

For groups of 6 or more a private charter is nearly always better value than shared tickets, and it lets you set the itinerary — a specific bay for lunch, a snorkelling stop, an earlier return for nap time.

How booking works

Direct booking through the operator

We share the shortlist of operators that match the group size, budget and itinerary. Guests book and pay the operator directly — either through the operator's booking page or by bank transfer. We take no commission on trips, which is why we're happy to recommend the small family-run operators alongside the big marina-front brands.

For a full-day private charter it's worth booking 3–4 weeks ahead in July and August. Shared shorter trips almost always have availability the day before.

Local context

The Central Algarve coast from the water

The coastline from Vilamoura west to Lagos is the most photographed in Portugal for a reason — a 40 km wall of ochre cliffs, hidden beaches only reachable by boat, and the string of sea caves that culminate at Benagil. From Vilamoura you're perfectly placed: far enough east to have your own launch marina, close enough west that the cliffs are a morning's motoring.

The Ria Formosa lagoon lies east of the marina — a separate, slower trip through sandbanks and salt flats, best on a small traditional boat with a picnic. Ask specifically for a Ria Formosa skipper; it's a different licence and a different mindset.

Common questions

How much do boat charters cost?+

Shared trips: €35–€55 per adult for a 2.5h dolphin trip, €65–€90 for a Benagil caves day trip. Private charters: €450–€700 for a half-day (up to 8 guests), €900–€1500 for a full day. Fuel is usually included; drinks and food vary.

What's the difference between the Benagil trip and the dolphin trip?+

Dolphin trips head west and south into the open ocean where common and bottlenose pods feed year-round. Benagil goes west along the cliff coast to the famous sea cave with the hole in the ceiling — best combined with a stop at Marinha beach. Different itineraries, both worth doing on a week's stay.

Are trips suitable for children?+

Yes, from age 3 upwards. Children under 12 must wear a life jacket at all times on deck — every operator supplies these. Pregnant women beyond 28 weeks are discouraged from rigid inflatable (RIB) trips due to hull slap; catamarans and cruisers are fine.

What happens in bad weather?+

Portuguese maritime authority (AMN) grounds trips at wind force 5+ or sea state 3+. If the operator cancels for weather, guests get a full refund or a re-book. If the guest cancels for any other reason inside 24h, the deposit is usually retained.
